1. What
is coherence?
Answer: Coherence is a network of relations which
organize and create text.
2. What
is coherence according to Blum Kulka & Sinclair? (see p. 221)
Answer:
Blum-Kulka’s definition
of coherence as ‘a covert potential meaning relationship among parts of a text,
made overt by the reader or listener through processes of interpretation’(1986:
17) implies that she sees meaning, or coherence, as a property of a text, even
though it is only accessible through processes of interpretation.
3. After
reading the passages (p. 219-222), if you think that coherence is a part of
situation, what kind of situation is it? Explain it in detail!
Answer:
No text is inherently coherent or incoherent. In the
end, it all depends on the receiver, and on his ability to interpret the
indications present in the discourse so that, finally, he manages to understand
it in a way which seems coherent to him – in a way which corresponds with his
idea of what it is that makes a series of actions into an integrated whole.
(Charolles, 1983: 95)
In my opinion it
depends on the context, and also the experience of the writer when translate a
text. But, Blum-Kulka has state that coherence meaning can be veiled in a text.
She implies that she sees meaning, or coherence, as a property of a text, even
though it is only accessible through processes of interpretation.
4. Translate
the text into English.
"Tugas yang diberikan buat kita berdarah-darah.
Bro, habis ujian kita minum-minum yuk. Ada diskon di sana, beli tiga cuma 60k.
Tenang, nggak bikin kita terbang kok."
Answer:
“The task given to us is making us bleeding. Bro, let's
go out for a drink. There is a discount there, buy three for only 60k. Just
calm, it does not make us fly.”
